Kroger is in the running to become the first major grocery chain to get a freezers-only program.
Kroger announced the partnership with the American Council of Grocery Stores on Monday.
The grocery chain says the freezers will be stocked with the freshest ingredients, and its freezers are always open 24/7.
The program will begin in the first quarter of 2019, Kroger said.
Krover will purchase the equipment and make it available for the entire Kroger team, including staff, to use, the grocery chain said.
The company says that it will spend $2.6 billion over the next five years to expand the program, which will offer freezers for staff to use at all of its stores nationwide.
Kroer has been making strides in expanding its freezer program with a number of locations across the country.
In January, the company announced a freezer-only plan in six Kroger stores in the Los Angeles area, and it plans to launch an additional 10 locations across North America by the end of 2019.
Kroers goal is to have a freezing facility in every Kroger store by 2021, and the company has already signed up more than 300,000 people for freezers.
The first freezers were installed at its largest store in Houston in December, and Kroger has plans to open freezers in the U.K. and Canada as well.
Kroeger says it has already purchased about 1.2 million refrigerators for freezer use.
